The 3M Peltor ComTac XPI is a professional-grade electronic hearing protection system developed for demanding tactical environments where hearing protection and situational awareness are equally important.

Designed for military, law enforcement, shooting and other professional applications, the ComTac XPI protects the user's hearing from harmful impulse noise while its level-dependent ambient listening function allows surrounding sounds, conversations and environmental cues to remain audible.

This combination makes the ComTac XPI particularly suitable for situations where conventional passive hearing protection would significantly reduce situational awareness.

Level-Dependent Hearing Protection

The ComTac XPI uses external microphones to pick up ambient sound and reproduce it electronically inside the ear cups. Normal environmental sounds can therefore remain audible while harmful sound levels are limited.

The level-dependent function offers four volume settings as well as a silent mode, allowing the headset to be adjusted according to the environment and the user's preference.

The reproduced ambient sound is limited to 82 dB(A).

Advanced User Configuration

One of the key features of the ComTac XPI is its extensive voice-guided menu system.

Settings can be changed directly on the headset without requiring additional software or an external power supply.

For environments requiring additional hearing protection, the ComTac XPI can be combined with properly fitted earplugs.

The integrated Ear Plug Mode increases the level of ambient sound and the external input by approximately 6 dB, compensating for the additional attenuation created by the earplugs.

When used together with suitable earplugs, the source states an attenuation value of up to 39 dB SNR for the combined protection configuration.

Silent Mode

The ComTac XPI also incorporates a Silent Mode, allowing the external ambient microphones to be quickly switched off when required.

This gives the user additional control over how the headset behaves in changing operational or shooting environments.

Designed for Helmet Use

The low-profile ear cups and headband configuration are designed to allow the ComTac XPI to be worn underneath compatible helmets.

The folding headband also makes the headset considerably more compact when stored or transported.

Compared with the preceding ComTac XP, the XPI introduced several refinements, including improved sealing around the battery compartment, additional protection of the electronics against saltwater exposure, reduced pressure points in the headband and a more comprehensive voice-guided menu system.

Stand-Alone Operation

The ComTac XPI operates as a completely self-contained electronic hearing protection system.

No external software or external power source is required for its hearing-protection and level-dependent functions.

Power is supplied by 2x AAA batteries, with an approximate operating time of 200 hours, depending on battery type, temperature and operating conditions.

To help conserve battery power, the headset can automatically switch off after two hours without a button being pressed. Warning signals for low battery and automatic shutdown can also be enabled or disabled through the menu.

Communication Upgrade Capability

This version can also form the basis of a communications setup.

Compatible microphone upgrade solutions can be used to convert the hearing protection into a communications headset for connection to suitable radio equipment.

This makes the ComTac XPI particularly interesting for users who initially require high-quality active hearing protection but may want to expand their setup with communications capability later.
